My cat is drooling, aloof, weird,& oh, her breath smells!

Comel started behaving weird this morning - she’s drooling badly, her chin seemed ulcerated, and she won’t let me touch her face, and won’t even allow her kitties to suckle! What’s going on? –Lina.

Hi Lina, the fact that Comel was drooling and avoiding you from touching her face should prompt you to check out her mouth/ oral cavity. I had a friend whose cat had exactly the same symptoms as Comel and she’s not been drinking for two days. She wanted to drink, but every time she touched the water she’ll walk away. When we finally checked her mouth, her breath was really odorous! She had severe halithosis.

So we opened her mouth, with some struggles, and guess what did we find? Hanging right from the middle of her hard palate was a little bone fragment, about 2cm long - long enough to stick between both her canine teeth. Her gums were red, bleeding slightly. Her breath was.. ewww…. I suppose she was so dehydrated her kidney function was temporarily compromised causing the blood urea level to build up which resulted in that ugly smell. I took a forcep, and pulled the bone out.Immediately she ran towards the water pan and started drinking non-stop. Later on, she allowed the kitties to suckle too. And her behaviour? Back to normal. =)

Don’t feed bones to your animals - be it dog or cat. You’ll never know when they’re in trouble, until they’re SERIOUSLY in trouble. It may be too late then.
